The good wine

and what did the servants see,
who heard the word that bade them draw – 
clear water – or grape’s first blood-red blush? 
 
and what won the steward’s praise –
just better wine that warmed his throat
and pressed out his word: Good? 

and when they came
to clear the jars away,
did they remember – 
ears scorched
by the word of changing,
hands gripping ladles tight 
to save every drop – 

did they know
what they bore
was sign, 
was beginning?
